Frequently Asked Questions about the PADDLE®
Is the PADDLE treeless?
No pad - no saddle - a PADDLE! The PADDLE does not contain a traditional saddle tree. Instead, an adjustable gullet and the suspension of the stirrup bars are connected using a specially developed pressure distribution element. This special suspension allows stirrups to be hooked into safety stirrup bars without creating local pressure points. The Velcro cushions can be individually positioned. The flexible shape automatically conforms to the curve of the horse's back.
How do I find the right size for me and my horse?
The size of our riding pads & PADDLE is based on the rider's clothing size. The seat profile allows the rider to sit comfortably and centered when the correct size is chosen. Size S is recommended for clothing sizes between 34-36, Size M up to 38-40, and Size L from size 42-46. If the seat surface is too small, the rider (especially with the rising seat profile of the Dressage Riding Pad and the PADDLE) would not only sit uncomfortably but also exert unnecessary pressure on the rising seat profile and cantle, thereby increasing pressure on the rear part of the horse's back.
Can I use smaller Velcro cushions with the PADDLE?
The Velcro cushions provided with the PADDLE are designed in size, length, and shape to provide an optimal and even pressure distribution on the horse's back for the corresponding seat size. These cushions are deliberately slightly longer than the actual seat surface to ensure a smooth pressure transition, especially at the edges and rear end, avoiding pressure points.
Can the PADDLE be used without Velcro cushions?
We strongly advise against this. Only in combination with correctly attached Velcro cushions can we ensure real spinal clearance and comfortable pressure distribution for the horse. Using the PADDLE without Velcro cushions results in it lying directly on the spine, which can cause painful pressure points. The provided cushions ensure an optimal fit.
Is the PADDLE suitable for horses with a short back (e.g., I need size L, but my horse is more M)?
The size of the PADDLE is based on the rider's clothing size. The Velcro cushions included with the PADDLE are designed in terms of size, length, and shape so that they provide an optimal and even pressure distribution on the horse's back based on the seat size. This creates an ideal weight distribution of the rider on short-backed horses. See the size chart for guidance.
How long is the PADDLE and how heavy?
Weight of the Western PADDLE: approx. 12 kg. Weight of the Dressage PADDLE: approx. 6.5 kg.
Will there be an XL PADDLE?
No. What alternatives can we offer instead? Custom-made PADDLE in size L with shortened or block knee rolls - this creates more space in the front area for the rider's thigh. The Spring PADDLE (Size M, L) is also only available in size L, but in this model, the forward-cut saddle flap and small attached block roll provide more space for the thigh compared to the Original PADDLE with side comfort roll, shortened roll, or block roll. Western PADDLEs in M, L - The Western PADDLE in size L generally has a slightly flatter seat shape, no knee rolls, and offers more space for the rider than the Original or Spring PADDLE.
Which saddle pad fits under which PADDLE?
Exact specifications can be found on the homepage. For internal use: Please measure PADDLEs produced before 2024 regarding the length and size of the cushions (M/L). Based on customer feedback, changes were made to the length of the cushions and the cantle. For PADDLEs made after 2024: Use dressage/jumping pads, but always measure again, as pad sizes from different manufacturers can vary significantly. See size chart.
Does the PADDLE fit all horse types, e.g., draft horses, Icelandics, and other special breeds?
Our PADDLE includes an individually adjustable gullet iron. This can be adjusted infinitely and as often as needed. With the adjustable Velcro cushions, the spinal channel can also be customized. There are great videos online that explain this clearly and easily. Customer feedback shows that the PADDLE can be adapted to many different horse types - from ponies, Icelandics, Norwegians, Iberians to draft horses - many horse and rider pairs are successfully using it.
Do I need special accessories for optimal use of the PADDLE (padded pad, extra padding)?
To improve the pressure distribution of a PADDLE, we recommend using synthetic or lambskin saddle pads. Lambskin pads enhance pressure distribution due to their soft and dense texture, adapting optimally to the horse's body shape. This leads to even pressure and a more comfortable experience for the horse. Lambskin also regulates climate - keeping warm in winter and wicking moisture in summer - and acts as shock absorption to improve the horse's comfort and performance. Alternatively, use a correction pad with felt inserts, which allows quick adjustment to different horse types or temporary changes (after illness, winter/summer shape, etc.).
How does fitting work for horses with swaybacks, high withers, or other special back shapes?
Basically, the same as with any other horse. We address special features in the video 'Adjustment for particularly broad or narrow horses with high withers.' In some cases, additional Velcro cushions with special fillings or padded pads may be needed. When adjusting the PADDLE, the Velcro pads and especially the gullet iron must be fitted correctly to the horse. We have created a step-by-step guide to help with this. You'll find it in the magazine article 'Adjusting the PADDLE with the Fitting System,' which shows how you can perform the adjustment easily on-site. For those who prefer not to adjust it themselves, appointments for on-site fitting or adjustment are available. A service fee of 190 is charged, which is reduced to 150 per person from 3 participants.
How is the weight distributed? Can pressure points occur?
Pressure measurements with riders weighing 60-110 kg have shown that the PADDLE does not develop pressure points under the rider and stays within the desired pressure distribution norms. For a 110 kg rider, measurements show that the Velcro cushions distribute body weight over a large, even surface while maintaining spinal clearance. The displayed values are individual and cannot be universally applied but serve as guidance. They show what is possible, but each case should be professionally assessed.
How long can I ride with the PADDLE?
This applies to all product categories: saddle, pad, PADDLE. Our recommendation: This depends on the training and health condition of both horse and rider and should be assessed daily by the rider, and if needed, by a professional. For longer rides: ensure a proper fit, use maximum comfort saddle pads (lambskin or corrective pads), and never use the PADDLE without Velcro cushions. Introduce it gradually and monitor regularly. For trail riding with luggage: we advise against it, as a saddle tree provides the needed stability and weight distribution for luggage.
Can I use the PADDLE as a complete saddle replacement?
Let your horse decide - each situation is individual. Many professional and leisure riders can no longer imagine daily training without this product. Examples: flip-flop, sneaker, hiking boot. The PADDLE is the sneaker of riding gear - comfortable, flexible, and versatile. It offers more support and pressure distribution than a pad but remains lighter and more adaptable than a classic saddle. Thanks to the adjustable gullet, flexible interior, and pressure distribution element, the PADDLE adapts to both horse and rider, offering a pleasant and free riding feel - ideal for daily use, training, and diverse activities. Just like not every shoe fits every foot, riding gear choices should be individual. Health, training, and development status of the horse play a major role. What suits one horse may not suit another. So don't blindly follow general advice - let your horse decide what feels comfortable.
What can I do if there are fitting issues?
Customers can book a fitting appointment or on-site adjustment for the PADDLE. We charge a service fee of 190, which is reduced to 150 per person for 3 or more participants. For even easier adjustment, we've created video tutorials showing each step using the Fitting System directly on the horse. We also have a video explaining what to consider when fitting the PADDLE to very wide, narrow, or short horses. See our YouTube channel or the Signum homepage.
Can the PADDLE be used for breaking in young horses?
Yes, due to its light weight, young horses generally perceive the introduction to saddling more pleasantly. The product is light, soft, flexibly adjustable (gullet + Velcro cushions), and conforms to the horse's movements. Removable stirrups allow flexibility during training. Initial mounting exercises are very easy. The suede leather offers grip and security, especially with active horses. Close contact and a tight leg position are major benefits. The PADDLE offers a solid starting point before a custom saddle is made for the horse's discipline or specific seat needs. It remains useful long-term - e.g., during recovery phases, if the saddle is being refitted, or between seasonal shape changes. Older horses also benefit from the PADDLE due to its light weight and flexibility.
How do I properly care for the PADDLE? Durability?
Suede develops a natural patina with regular use (in high-friction areas, it may resemble smooth leather over time). This aging effect gives the leather a unique and authentic appearance. The patina can make the leather softer, shinier, or matte. Color changes and signs of wear are natural and make the leather one-of-a-kind. These are not defects, but characteristics of natural leather. Avoid stains: suede is prone to water and oil stains. Avoid liquids and greasy substances. Rain and moisture: Wet suede can become stiff. Let it air dry slowly, avoid direct heat. Consider protective covers. No riding in saltwater - it damages and dries out leather. Cleaning tips: Use a suede brush to remove dirt and restore texture. For tough stains, use special suede cleaners (available in our shop). Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. Proper care and handling preserve durability and beauty. Patina is a natural part of aging and adds character.
How does vegan leather compare to suede?
Vegan leather is made without any animal materials - it's a synthetic product. With proper care, vegan leather is durable and long-lasting. The grippy surface with suede-like texture gives a very secure seat, whether riding in breeches with leather trim or jeans. We advise against silicone-grip breeches due to high abrasion on the leather/synthetic material.
